It is possible, but you need a very powerful micro-controller or microprocessor, which may cost you over US$15.00, the normal 8-bit low end 8051/AVR/Microchip conrtrollers may not have enough CPU power to handle the works. Also, the programing effort  is very huge unless you pay thousands of US$ to buy the development kit which provides you all the library needed.
Form my point of view, it is more cost-effective(both for the component cost and the development time) to use a cheap low-end microcontroller with the network interface chip - unless you are going to do a research project instead of commercial purpose.
